Gary’s strategy is brilliant. His frontal attack is only a distraction: at the same time, he has one of his guys in the stratosphere attempting to destroy the secret weapon of the enemy and a group of tech specialists deactivating the weapon on firm land.

Besides Mark Hammill (Luke Skywalker in “Star Wars”) and William Shatner (captain Kirk in “Star Trek”) and other famous Hollywood stars, this time we get to see Patrick Stewart (captain Jean-Luc Picard in “Star Trek: the Next Generation”). What could all of these Hollywood stars have in common? And why were they abducted at the beginning of the miniseries? Mark Millar has found a way to balance pop culture references, parody and homages in one sweeping narrative.
Although, it seems to me, that there is something else going on here. Millar has explained that when he was 12 years old he sent a letter to Dave Gibbons, suggesting to the legendary British artist to work on a new series created by himself (the kid had promised that he could do something even greater than Watchmen, which Gibbons had just finished drawing). Obviously, back then Dave Gibbons knew that no 12-year-old could write anything memorable, but he still replied with a very encouraging letter.

Millar had to wait for decades until he was one of the most important and influential authors of the industry, and finally he had the opportunity to work in a project with Gibbons. Millar has expressed his admiration for Watchmen, and just like the secret plan of Ozymandias demanded the kidnapping of certain scientists, artists and thinkers throughout the world, the plan of the antihero in “The Secret Service” also demands the capture of cultural icons. In both cases, the prisoners are kept alive for a very specific purpose. I’ve really enjoyed this parallelism, which happens to have a very humorous approach.
Dave Gibbons draws some very good pages, like the ones that depict the final and violent confrontation between Gary and one of his opponents. The scenes of the worldwide orgy, deemed in the comic as “19 minutes of world peace” are also priceless. And thus, this miniseries comes to an end.

El mejor espía de la corona británica está muerto, y ahora le toca a su sobrino Gary salvar no sólo Inglaterra sino también al resto del mundo. En el capítulo final de "El servicio secreto", Gary decide que para hallar aliados debe buscarlos no en las filas oficiales del servicio secreto sino en las instalaciones de entrenamiento. Es por eso que recluta a muchos de sus compañeros de clase, y juntos lanzan un último ataque desesperado, casi suicida, en el cuartel general del enemigo.
La estrategia de Gary es brillante. Su ataque frontal es sólo una distracción: al mismo tiempo, tiene a uno de sus chicos en la estratósfera intentando destruir el arma secreta del enemigo y a un grupo de tecno-especialistas desactivando el arma en tierra firma.
Además de Mark Hammill (Luke Skywalker en “Star Wars”) y William Shatner (el capitán Kirk en “Star Trek”) y otras famosas estrellas de Hollywood, esta vez nos encontramos con Patrick Stewart (el capitán Jean-Luc Picard en “Star Trek: the Next Generation”). ¿Qué podrían tener en común todas estas estrellas de Hollywood? ¿Y por qué fueron secuestrados al comienzo de la miniserie? Mark Millar ha encontrado una manera de balancear referencias a la cultura pop, parodias y homenajes en una cautivante narrativa.

Aunque, me parece a mí, hay algo más aquí. Millar ha explicado que cuando tenía 12 años le envió una carta a Dave Gibbons, sugiriéndole al legendario artista británico que trabajasen en una nueva serie creada por él mismo (el chiquillo había prometido que haría algo aún más grandioso que "Watchmen", obra que Gibbons acababa de dibujar). Obviamente, en ese entonces Dave Gibbons sabía que ningún doceañero podría escribir algo memorable, pero aun así respondió con una misiva muy alentadora.
Millar tuvo que esperar por décadas hasta que llegó a ser uno de los autores más importantes e influyentes de la industria, y finalmente tuvo la oportunidad de trabajar en este proyecto con Gibbons. Millar ha expresado su admiración por "Watchmen", y al igual que el plan secreto de Ozymandias demandaba el secuestro de ciertos científicos, artistas y pensadores a lo largo del mundo, el plan del antihéroe en "El servicio secreto" también demanda la captura de íconos culturales. En ambos casos, los prisioneros son mantenidos con vida para un propósito muy específico. Realmente he disfrutado este paralelismo, que tiene un enfoque muy humorístico.
Dave Gibbons dibuja algunas páginas muy buenas, como las que retratan la violenta confrontación final entre Gary y uno de sus oponentes. Las escenas de la orgía mundial, considerada en el cómic como “19 minutos de paz mundial” son también de primera. Y de este modo, esta miniserie llega a su fin.
